Can North Capital verify a non-US entity without a US tax ID?
Common Q&A about entity verification for non-US entities
1. Can North Capital approve an entity for investment if its jurisdiction does not legally require the entity to have a tax ID? If yes, what declaration or supporting documents must the entity provide?
There are a number of entities that do not get their own EIN (e.g., revocable trusts), so this is not an issue. We would just need formation documents (trust certification, articles of incorporation, etc.). You can find a list of documents needed for common entity types HERE
2. What identity information and documents are required for the minor beneficial owner? What evidence is acceptable if the minor does not have a passport or another accepted photo ID?
Some foreign entities are required to file for U.S. tax IDs. If they have done so, great. If they do not have one, that is fine. We will accept their domestic tax ID.
3. Can North Capital approve such a trust for investment if its jurisdiction does not legally require a tax ID? If yes, what evidence must the trust provide?
Yes. They can provide their trust documents and then KYC information for the trustees.
4. Do these answers depend on the entity’s country of formation? If yes, please share the applicable restrictions or explain how we should check a specific country.
No. Some countries may require enhanced due diligence due to their sketchiness. We maintain a list of jurisdictions that we keep an eye on.
